Metabolomics is gaining popularity due to the wealth of information available in the metabolome. Metabolites are the functional molecules most directly associated with phenotype as their status is the ultimate end product of gene expression. While metabolomic studies offer the promise of being able to generate substantial amounts of data, proper study design and data analysis are essential for obtaining meaningful results and ultimately publication.
